A Few More Flies

On the odd sunny day these last two weeks I’ve been focused on trying to capture more images of flies that have been frequenting our purple asters. The flowers are pretty much done now and I’m not sure how many more chances I’m going to get to enjoy these fabulous flies.

I haven’t had a chance to work out the identification of these flies yet, so I’ll just name them Unknown Fly #1, etc. Please leave a comment if you can help me with identification – I’ll update this page as I work them out!

So here they are, a few more flies…

Unknown Fly #1
Unknown Fly #1 – possibly Syritta pipiens
Unknown Fly #2
Unknown Fly #2 – Still unknown!
Unknown Fly #3
Unknown Fly #3 – Syrpus sp.?
Unknown Fly #4
Unknown Fly #4 – possibly Eristalis arbustorum.

Update:

  • Unknown Fly #1 – Possibly Syritta pipiens
  • Unknown Fly #2 – Still unknown – this was one of the coolest looking flies I saw during this shoot but the hardest to pin down.
  • Unknown Fly #3 – Likely Syrpus sp. – University of Alberta has a detailed section on several species in this genus in their Entomology Collection
  • Unknown Fly #4 – Probably Eristalis arbustorum. Field marks – pillose face (white, without black median line), yellow markings on legs (mid tibia, mid leg, yellow).
