I’m trying to be a little more disciplined over the last month or two and am making an effort to get up earlier to catch the first morning light—such was a case late last month when I was down in Victoria to pick up a long awaited Fuji X-T1 and a 10-24mm lens. I headed out to Cattle Point just before sunrise and I have to admit that I’m very impressed with both the camera and this lens. The image and build quality is excellent.

Cattle Point is an interesting place to photograph. The glacier scoured rock makes for interesting foreground subjects and the east facing orientation makes it ideal for sunrises. Driftwood logs can be used in a number of creative ways as leading lines and framing in photographs. For the bird photographer, this small park is also a good place to photograph shorebirds and the odd weird off course migrant—it is always worth checking for unusual birds.

The sunrise was less than spectacular on the day that I was there, but the light was interesting and the rock and wood had a timeless quality to them. This early in the morning, there were only a few fisherman heading out from the boat launch and a single walker.

Cattle Point is a small park, but well worth visiting if you’re in Victoria, British Columbia. Be sure to check out the Garry oak meadows nearby as well.
